Creating the Perfect Patio with DG Heath

patio slabs swanseaThese days, tastes in home décor tend to veer towards clean, uncluttered spaces featuring simple, elegant lines in soft, soothing colours – very different from the styles preferred in the last century! Interestingly, our gardens today have become a continuation of our homes in terms of simplicity of products and design, and this includes our choices in patio slabs.

It’s never to early to start planning what you’re going to do to improve your garden in the Spring and Summer.  The weather may still be chilly and unpredictable, but it’s a good idea to have a clear idea in your head about what you’d like the outdoor space in your home to look like before you even begin to start shopping and getting on with the improvements.

One of the main changes people make year on year is to improve the look and quality of their patio. Inf fact, at DG Heath, we already have customers coming into our store enquiring about the how they can freshen up their patio or create a brand new one. And of course the first question, we are asked is which patio slabs are the best.

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question as there many different options when it comes to patio slabs and your choice will be determined by a number of factors including the size of your patio and the type of soil or base of the area.

So, to help you make the right decision for your particular garden, the team at DG Heath has come up with a guide our best-selling patio slabs as follows:

Sandstone Patio Slabs

One of the most popular stones for garden patios is Sandstone. It is tough enough to withstand the changeable British weather but as it is softer, it’s easier to cut and so tends to be lower in cost than other products.

What’s more, sandstone comes in a variety of shapes and colours though the most popular colours tend to be greys and golden, natural finishes. Some customers opt to mix and match the colours of their Sandstone slabs for contrast and variety.

Concrete Patio Slabs

Concrete is also a cost-effective option for patio slabs. The appearance of the concrete can vary from a clean uniform finish to one intentionally mixed to create a more traditional look and feel. In addition to standard slabs, we also offer textured concrete to help you to create your own unique finish.

At DG Heath, our concrete patio slabs are produced and manufactured in Wales, enabling us to reduce our carbon footprint as well as supporting local businesses.  Our slabs are stain-resistant to keep your patio looking fresh and clean for years to come.  And we always advise our customers to ensure that they seal their concrete slabs to protect from stains, weeds and algae.

Slate Patio Slabs

Slate has been a popular choice among our customers for many years due to its soft texture and subtle colour options which create the traditional and timeless look of natural stone.

Like Sandstone, our slate patio slabs are easy to shape and come with sawn edges, making it easy for them to be laid without gaps.

Due to the softness of slate, we do recommend  that these slabs are used in areas which are relatively sheltered and not likely to be covered excessively by rainfall.

Limestone Patio Slabs

Limestone is finely textured, so it takes on a distinctive, velvety finish when cut for paving and patios.  This stone is particularly hard wearing and durable which ideal when it comes to withstanding the demands of  unpredictable British weather.

Limestone slabs tends to be more evenly coloured than sandstone or granite, and their very fine grain makes them relatively easy to cut into a variety of decorative shapes.  Our limestone products are hand chiselled to offer the authentic and timeless texture of natural stone.

It’s worth noting that limestone can fade over time and so we recommend the slabs are treated as soon as they have been laid.
