Vinyl Floor coverings

In 2018 Unilin Decor introduced a new flooring product into their portfolio of floor coverings this came in the form of Vinyl. Being forever the optimist I was sceptical to say the least on vinyl and the advantages that it would have over the more traditional laminate and engineered wooden floor coverings.

I was proven wrong about Vinyl Flooring

Well i have had to eat my words It seems that I have been proven wrong again with Vinyl flooring sales going from strength to strength, the durability and warmth of the vinyl planked floors has given customers a fantastic alternative to Ceramic Tiles & Laminate. I think that its diversity has helped to increase its popularity as it has been proven that it can take a beating and still hold up with spills, scuffs and general heavy wear within the family home. ( Beware of Roller chairs ).

Advantages of Vinyl Flooring

  • Vinyl wood flooring is very low maintenance.
  • Lino is soft underfoot.
  • Linoleum Will not split or crack.
  • Vinyl can be installed in areas with higher moisture levels.
  • Only a 3mm expansion gap needs to be left for Vinyl

Disadvantages of Vinyl flooring

  • Vinyl is softer than Ceramics and will mark easier.
  • Vinyl cannot be installed on Electric underfloor heating.
  • Vinyl is More expensive than Laminate Flooring.
  • The sub-floor needs to be perfectly level to fit vinyl.

Our opinion on Vinyl Plank & Tile Flooring

Overall Vinyl is a really good product, it comes into its own when installing in wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Comparing it to laminate they are two totally different products both with their list of pros and cons. Personally I think that there is nothing harder wearing than a decent quality laminate.

So why purchase Vinyl not laminate ?

  • Its great in wet areas.
  • It doesn’t expand or contract as much.
  • Its soft and warm underfoot.

DONT

From speaking to the fitters and coming up against isues that have arisen there are three DONTS when it comes to Vinyl flooring –

  1. Don’t Install Vinyl on Electric underfloor heating.
  2. Don’t install Vinyl Flooring on an un-even subfloor.
  3. Don’t install Vinyl on Laminate flooring underlay.
